S&G Labs Hawaii will be distributing COVID-19 testing kits for in-office use as well as drive-through collection centers. Our testing kit contains all the vital tools for specimen collection and order requests. These kits can be ordered directly from our website or by request from your account representative.
Upon order retrieval, you will find each patient kit contains a storage bag, a swab, a reagent tube for the storage of the collected specimen filled with reagent, a blank label to be filled out, and a paper requisition.
The preferred method for sample collection is by nasopharyngeal swab. After the collection process is complete the sample is stored in the 4 mL tube filled with a reagent that inactivates the virus; this ensures Hawaii’s essential clinic staff, mail carriers, local couriers, and laboratory staff are kept safe from the active virus. The label should be filled out with the required information and affixed to the collection tube. The paper requisition should be filled out to completion and a copy of the patient’s insurance card can be attached or submitted via our HIPAA compliant website form.
For clinicians collecting samples in-office, a local courier can be arranged for the transport of COVID-19 samples.
For clinicians using telemedicine, the patient can be referred to an S&G Labs drive-through testing center where their sample will be collected and the requisition form will be matched to the form filled out by the referring provider.
Samples sent from islands other than Hawai’i (Big Island) should arrive in the laboratory in one to two days. Samples collected on the island of Hawai’i should arrive at the laboratory no later than the next day.
The sample then goes through a process called RT-PCR testing. Simply put, RNA will be extracted from the specimen and replicated in order for certified laboratory personnel to determine the presence or absence of the targeted SARS CoV 2 genes.
Once the results have been interpreted the sample results will be faxed to the referring provider listed on the original requisition form.
